I've got to say AliasWavefront's Maya 2 is awesome! Although the render is not as good looking as Mental Ray's or Pixar's RenderMan renderer, it is still the best animation program next to Avid's SoftImage 3D. Upon the new features in 2.5. Maya will be an untouchable industry standard 3D software.

Pixar chooses Maya Unlimited for upcoming films September 10, 1999, 1:15 pm ET.

Alias|Wavefront, an SGI company, announced today that Pixar Animation Studios has selected Maya Unlimited for use in geometric modeling on upcoming feature film production projects. "Alias|Wavefront's Maya software offers the best geometric modeling capabilities of any commercially available package," says Darwyn Peachey, Pixar's VP of research and development, in a press release. "Maya brings us the latest in geometric modeling technology, including Artisan and improved tools for polygonal modeling."

August 3, 1999 - Pixar Animation Studios (NASDAQ: PIXR) today announced that it is releasing version 3.9 of PhotoRealistic RenderMan, its Academy Award-winning visual effects software, and version 4.0 of the complete RenderMan Artist Tools suite. The new software, scheduled for shipment in September, makes RenderMan easier and more powerful for creative artists, and for the first time provides support for rendering on render farms running the Windows NT operating system.
